USA in Ghana

Program Overview:
USA in Ghana: An Exploration of Race & Identity Development in a Cross Cultural Exchange, is designed to be an immersive study of Ghana, both as the main center of the Atlantic Slave trade, and as a place that has figured prominently in the African American search for identity and post-colonial African independence.  It will offer an exploration of Ghanaian history and culture with an emphasis on its connection to the larger Pan-African movement.  Students will gain first-hand experiences of various aspects of community development and how indigenous practices involved in community development and maintenance have changed over time due to the impact of globalization.  While the bulk of students' learning experience will be through 3 service projects, there will also be opportunities to explore the Year of the Return Initiative and the opportunities available to  those wanting to repatriate.  

Accommodations and Meals:
All accommodations for the program are included in the program cost. Some meals are also included in the program cost. 

Students will take two of the following courses for a total of four (4) credit hours: 
IS 293 – An Exploration of Race & Identity Development in a Cross Cultural Exchange (3 hours)
IS 393 - Understanding the African Influence on African-American Culture and Black Identity (1 hour lab)
IS 393 - Special Topics (1 hour lab)

Students not currently enrolled at USA must complete application to the University of South Alabama prior to enrolling in this program.
Program Costs:
The cost of USA Summer in Ghana 2020 program is $5,799. USA Study Abroad scholarships are available to all USA student participants who submit an application and meet minimum program requirements. The first 5 USA students who commit to the program and complete a scholarship application will receive a USA Study Abroad scholarship of $500 for the program.  THIS IS THE OIE STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP THROUGH JAGSPOT.

Program cost includes all in-country transportation, accommodations and meals as described above, international health insurance and emergency assistance. Tuition for four (4) credit hours is also included and financial aid may be applied to the cost of the trip.  International airfare is NOT INCLUDED.

Participants should budget additional funds for supplies or personal expenses such as souvenirs or independent travel based upon individual spending habits.

Costs are based on anticipated exchange rates and enrollment and are subject to change. Program items may be changed in lieu of a price increase. Price may vary depending on international flight costs. 

Payment Schedule and Deadlines:
Space is limited. The deadline for applications  is February 23, 2020.  A program deposit of $350.00 is due at the time of application and no later than the final application deadline of February 23, 2020.

Final payment deadline is April 17, 2020.  Applicants can reserve a spot in the program by hitting the "Apply Now" button and completing the online program application. Once accepted, applicants can confirm their place in the program by paying the program deposit of $350. The deposit is applied toward the cost of the program, $300 of which fully refundable if the participant withdraws before the application deadline of February 23, 2020.

Financial aid may be applied to these courses. This program is part of the USA spring schedule of courses.

Refund Policy: Program fees are refundable only in the event of cancellation of the program and are based on recoverable expenses. All payments should be considered non-refundable and any requests for consideration of refunds based on extenuating circumstances (medical, etc…) must be made in writing and will be considered on a case by case basis.
